LASER TATTOO REMOVAL
How does the process of laser tattoo removal work?
Using advanced laser technology for tattoo eradication, laser tattoo removal directs concentrated laser beams into the tattoo ink, fragmenting it into minuscule particles.
These microscopic fragments are then effortlessly metabolised by the body, facilitating natural ink elimination without damaging the surrounding skin, distinctively superior to alternative tattoo removal methods.
How effective is tattoo removal?
Tattoo removal is highly effective, especially with advanced laser technologies like the PICO and Q-Switch lasers. The effectiveness depends on several factors, including the tattoo's size, colour, depth, and the individual's skin type. Darker ink colours, such as black and blue, tend to respond better, while lighter colours may require more sessions. Most tattoos can be significantly faded or completely removed after multiple treatments, though some may leave slight traces or ghosting, particularly if the ink was deeply embedded.

Is laser tattoo removal suitable for all skin types?
Laser tattoo is safe for skin types fitzpatrick 1-4, while fitzpatrick 4 & 6 skin tones have much greater risks with laser tattoo removal, which is why we currently recommend contacting to discuss prior to booking, potentially doing a patch test or taking a recommendation on a cover up artist. Please see more information towards the bottom of this page with regards to using laser on darker skin tones.
How long does tattoo removal take?
The duration of laser tattoo removal varies based on the size, colour, and depth of the tattoo. Most tattoos require multiple sessions, typically spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart, to allow the body time to eliminate the broken-down ink particles. Small tattoos may be removed in as few as 4-6 sessions, while larger or more complex tattoos can take 10 or more sessions. The complete process can take several months to over a year, depending on the tattoo and individual factors.
Can a tattoo be completely removed?
The short answer is yes; a tattoo can be removed entirely with laser tattoo removal. However, the success of complete removal depends on several factors.
Firstly, the age and location of the tattoo can affect its removal. Older tattoos are typically easier to remove as they have had more time to fade and break down. Tattoos closer to the heart, such as on the chest or back, tend to heal faster and fade quicker than those on extremities like hands or feet.
Secondly, ink type and colour also play a crucial role in the effectiveness of laser tattoo removal. Black ink is usually the easiest colour to remove, red coming second while other colours, such as pink, orange blue, green & yellow, can be more difficult especially lighter pigments that have been mixed with white ink, which reflects the laser light.
Lastly, skin type also plays a significant role. People with lighter skin tones typically have better or faster results than those with darker skin tones, because in order to work on the skin safely settings must be lowered. More information on laser for darker skin tones is available in detail further down on this page.
WHO IS SUITABLE FOR LASER BROW TATTOO REMOVAL?
Fitzpatrick skin types 1-4 are suitable for laser removal, skin types 5 & 6 can be worked on however the laser can also unfortunately target the melanocytes aswell as the pigment in the skin creating a higher risk of skin damage, so much lower settings are necessary to work safely.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
The average amount is 2-5 sessions. If the skin is heavily oversaturated, more sessions will be needed. If there is just a slight shadow sometimes one session is enough. Depending on how much pigment is present, it can vary from 1-8 sessions.
DO I NEED A PATCH TEST?
The first session will include a patch test, quite often we will be able to wait 10/15 mins & then proceed if no adverse reactions are visible. Alternatively we will wait 2 weeks before the full treatment if there is any adverse reaction visible or you have a skin type that requires caution.
LASER TATTOO REMOVAL PRE CARE
Here’s a list of things to avoid before having laser tattoo removal to help ensure a safe and effective treatment:
1. Avoid Sun Exposure
Refrain from tanning or excessive sun exposure on the area to be treated for at least 2-4 weeks before the session, as it increases the risk of skin damage and complications.
2. No Self-Tanning Products
Don’t apply any self-tanners or spray tans on the treatment area, as these can affect how the laser interacts with your skin.
3. Do Not Wax or Shave Aggressively
Avoid waxing or aggressive shaving on the tattooed area a few days before the session to reduce irritation and sensitivity. Gentle shaving is usually fine a day or two before.
4. Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications and Supplements
Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and other blood-thinning medications, as well as supplements like fish oil and vitamin E, for at least a week before treatment (unless advised otherwise by your doctor). These can increase the risk of bruising. Please note no laser whilst on accutane & for 6 months after.
5. No Alcohol or Smoking
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your session, as it can dehydrate your skin and affect the healing process. Smoking can also delay healing, so it’s best to reduce it if possible.
6. Skip Certain Skincare Products
Don’t use products with active ingredients like retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or other exfoliating agents on the treatment area for about a week prior, as these can make your skin more sensitive.
7. Avoid Wearing Makeup or Lotion on Treatment Day
Keep the area clean and free of any lotions, oils, or makeup on the day of your treatment. The skin should be bare to allow the laser to work effectively.
8. Do Not Schedule Immediately Before Intense Physical Activity
Try not to plan intense physical activities (like strenuous workouts or swimming) immediately before or after treatment, as these can irritate the skin and potentially delay healing.
LASER TATTOO REMOVAL AFTERCARE
Please note this is also relative to pmu laser removal however due to the size area being treated & the laser settings being lower for the type of ink that is used in pmu, the healing process is minimal in comparison to body tattoo laser. Please note healing is also minimal in comparison & is listed below the main body tattoo healing information.
Here’s a comprehensive list of aftercare tips to follow after laser tattoo removal, including special advice for very sensitive skin.
1. Keep the Area Clean and Dry
Gently wash the treated area with mild soap and cool water 24 hours after treatment. Pat dry; avoid rubbing to prevent irritation.
2. Avoid Sun Exposure
Protect the treated area from the sun for at least 4-6 weeks. Use high SPF sunscreen (50+), wear protective clothing, and avoid tanning to prevent pigmentation issues and promote healing.
3. Apply Cold Compresses for Swelling and Redness
Use a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a cloth for 10-15 minutes at a time if there’s any swelling or redness. This can help reduce discomfort and inflammation.
4. Avoid Physical Activities that Cause Sweating
Refrain from intense physical activity (e.g., exercise, hot yoga) for 1-2 days post-treatment. Excessive sweating can irritate the treated area and slow down the healing process.
5. Don’t Pick, Scratch, or Shave the Treated Area
Scabs, blisters, or flakes may form. Avoid shaving over the area until fully healed. If scabbing occurs, do not pick, shave, rub, scratch, or wash the area aggressively to avoid possible scarring. If blistering occurs, do not drain the blisters; allow them to dry and heal naturally. Take care to avoid trauma to the treated area for the first 7-10 days.
6. Use Gentle, Fragrance-Free Moisturizers
After the first 24 hours, you may apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer like aloe vera gel or an unscented healing/antiseptic ointment to soothe the skin and keep it hydrated.
7. Avoid Hot Baths, Showers, and Pools
Avoid hot showers for at least 48 hours, as heat and moisture can increase the risk of infection and irritation. Do not immerse the treatment area in water for the first three weeks post-procedure, or until the skin is fully healed. This includes bathtubs, jacuzzi, swimming pools, lakes, and the ocean.
8. Refrain from Using Harsh Skincare Products
Avoid products with retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and alcohol on or around the treated area for at least a week, as these can cause irritation and slow the healing process.
9. Be Patient with Results
Tattoo removal is a gradual process, and you may notice the tattoo fades slowly over time. Follow your practitioner’s advice for the timing of future sessions, typically spaced 6-8 weeks apart.
After Your Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment
Erythema (redness), edema (swelling), scabbing, flaking, irritation, or blistering in the treatment area is likely to occur and may last for several days. A white-gray discoloration may appear immediately after treatment and last from a few minutes to a few days. Your tattoo may darken, lighten, fade, or show no immediate change. On average, it takes 6-12 weeks for the body to process the tattoo pigment. Tattoo removal works by eliminating pigment through the body’s lymphatic system, so results will not be visibly evident for 8-12 weeks.
Special Advice for Sensitive Skin, Hives, or Itching
1. Monitor for Hives or Sensitivity Reactions
Some people occasionally, especially those with sensitive skin, may develop hives or itching around the treated area after laser tattoo removal. This is often an immune response reaction to the pigment particles being broken down by the laser.
2. Taking an Antihistamine
If you’re prone to hives or itching, you may take an over-the-counter antihistamine like cetirizine or loratadine, as recommended by your doctor, to help manage symptoms prior to laser & for 2/3 days post laser. Avoid scratching the area to prevent irritation and scarring.
3. Use a Cold Compress for Immediate Relief
Applying a cool, damp cloth or ice pack to the itchy or irritated area can soothe the skin and relieve itching. Repeat as needed but avoid excess moisture.
4. Choose Hypoallergenic, Fragrance-Free Products
To minimize the risk of irritation, only use hypoallergenic, fragrance-free products on the area during healing. This is particularly helpful for sensitive skin, which is more prone to reacting after laser treatment.
THE HEALING PROCESS POST LASER TATTOO REMOVAL.
Healing Guideline 1: Understanding the Immediate Healing Response and Frosting Effect
During and immediately after a laser tattoo removal session, it’s common to experience a phenomenon known as “frosting.” Frosting is a temporary white discoloration on the tattooed skin that occurs as the laser interacts with ink particles, releasing carbon dioxide that appears as a white frothy layer. This effect usually fades within 15–30 minutes, and it’s a natural sign that the laser is breaking down ink pigments for your body to gradually clear away. However, frosting doesn’t indicate permanent results just yet—it’s simply part of the body’s initial reaction to the laser.
In the first few days post-treatment, you may notice redness, swelling, or slight blistering on the treated area. This reaction is similar to a mild burn as the skin begins the healing process. These effects may last from a few hours to a couple of days, depending on your skin’s sensitivity and the intensity of the treatment. It’s crucial during this phase to follow proper aftercare: keep the area clean and dry, avoid sun exposure, and apply gentle moisturizers as needed. This helps soothe the skin and minimize the risk of complications.
Healing Guideline 2: Recognizing Gradual Results Over Time as Redness Fades
In the first two weeks following laser tattoo removal, the area may continue to look red, inflamed, or slightly scabbed. These signs are part of the body’s wound-healing process and may actually create a bit of contrast, making it harder to discern the true results initially. Additionally, the breakdown of pigment from the laser may cause some oxidation, or darkening, which can give the tattoo a slightly altered appearance immediately after treatment. As the redness and oxidation subside, it becomes easier to notice subtle fading, but significant changes are usually only visible after several weeks.
Tattoo fading tends to be a gradual process because the body needs time to metabolize and remove the pigment particles broken down by the laser. It’s normal not to see drastic changes immediately, as results typically develop over the course of several sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart. Each session gradually reduces ink density, leading to a lighter appearance over time. Remember that patience is key; as long as the skin is healing well and aftercare guidelines are followed, you’re allowing your body to naturally clear away the pigment for the best possible outcome.
These guidelines should provide clarity and reassurance throughout your laser tattoo removal journey, highlighting both the immediate healing process and the patience required to see progressive results.
THE HEALING PROCESS POST PMU LASER REMOVAL
The healing process for PMU (permanent makeup) laser removal is generally quicker and milder compared to traditional tattoo removal. Since PMU uses semi-permanent ink, which is typically less dense and formulated to fade over time, the laser can operate at lower settings to break down the pigment. Additionally, because PMU removal often targets small areas like eyebrows, eyeliner, or lips, there’s less skin to heal overall. Immediately after treatment, you may notice mild redness, slight swelling, or light frosting, but these usually subside within a day or two. The feeling is likened to mild sunburn. Most people find that the treated area feels back to normal within a week, with fading results continuing to appear over the following weeks as the body gradually clears away the pigment.
LASER TATTOO REMOVAL FOR DARKER SKIN TONES
Why Is Tattoo Removal Different for Darker Skin?
Melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color, also absorbs laser energy. In darker skin types, there is a higher concentration of melanin, which means that lasers must be used with more caution to avoid damaging the surrounding skin. At Novacane Studio, we prioritize the safety of our clients with darker skin tones by adjusting the laser settings to reduce the risk of side effects while still effectively breaking down tattoo ink.
Which machine is better for darker skin tones?
Pico and nano lasers differ in how they deliver energy: pico lasers use shorter picosecond pulses, while nano lasers use longer nanosecond pulses. Pico lasers are typically more powerful and efficient at breaking down pigment into smaller particles, making it easier for the body to clear. However, nano lasers are often better suited for darker skin tones because they are less aggressive, reducing the risk of damaging melanocytes, which can lead to unwanted pigmentation changes.
Melanocytes are cells located in the skin that produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. When lasers are used, they can sometimes damage these melanocytes, leading to hyperpigmentation (dark spots) or hypopigmentation (light spots). Pico lasers, may pose a higher risk of overheating or damaging melanocytes, especially in darker skin types, which is why nano lasers can be a safer option for such individuals.
Patch Test Requirement
For clients with Fitzpatrick types 4-6, we conduct a mandatory patch test prior to the full treatment. This test ensures that your skin reacts safely to the laser and allows us to fine-tune the laser settings for your specific skin type. The patch test is crucial for:
• Monitoring skin response and minimizing risks.
• Customizing treatment for maximum safety and efficacy.
• Reducing the potential for pigmentation issues.
Higher Number of Sessions for Darker Skin
Due to the need for lower laser settings to protect darker skin, clients with Fitzpatrick 4-6 may require additional sessions compared to lighter skin types. The lower settings take longer to break down the ink while keeping the skin safe, meaning multiple treatments are needed to fully fade the tattoo. For skin types 5 & 6 it’s important to weigh up the risks, the amount of sessions it will take, the different options (cover up tattoo) & to discuss the best or safest route.
What to expect at your appointment
The treatment can be completed in as little as 15 minutes, depending on the size of your tattoo and the type of ink used. Most clients compare the discomfort to that of getting a tattoo. If needed, you are able to purchase numbing cream from your local pharmacy and apply it one hour prior to your session. Following treatment, you may feel some discomfort, but it is common to experience redness, mild swelling, and/or tenderness in the treatment area, which typically resolves quickly. The post-treatment response will vary based on the extent of the treatment.
Discomfort may be relieved by taking over-the-counter pain relievers (paracetamol is best) or using ice packs in 20-30 minute intervals.
Avoid sun exposure to the treatment area throughout the course of your treatments. If sun exposure is necessary, keep the treatment area covered with a non-adherent bandage. Avoid prolonged sunlight exposure, and do not use UV tanning beds for four weeks after treatment.
Cleanse the treatment area once per day with a gentle soap and pat dry. To keep the area moist, apply an appropriate healing gel or a triple antibiotic ointment twice per day and cover with a non-adherent bandage for 7-10 days post-treatment, or until the area is healed.
If scabbing occurs, do not pick, shave, rub, scratch, or wash the area aggressively to avoid possible scarring. If blistering occurs, do not drain the blisters; allow them to dry and heal naturally. Take care to avoid trauma to the treated area for the first 7-10 days.
Avoid physical exercise (aerobics, sports) for 1-2 days. Refrain from rough activities (e.g., playing football) for 10 days after treatment.
Do not immerse the treatment area in water for the first three weeks post-procedure, or until the skin is fully healed. This includes bathtubs, Jacuzzis, swimming pools, lakes, and the ocean.
If the tattoo is on a lower extremity, keep the leg elevated to improve blood circulation and encourage healing.
Return in 6-10 weeks for your repeat session.
